Everglades National Park, FL, Feb 2002
This was my first visit to the Everglades. This is a large park with very discreet areas that have access by car. As I only had the one day to visit I had to choose which portion of the park I wanted to visit. I drove down from Ft Lauderdale and decided that I wanted to see the most southern portion and so headed for Flamingo FL and its visitor center. The photos are from this area, the only other place I stopped was at the Ernest Coe Visitor center that was near the entrance.
The drive in was through the swamp and Everglades. At the time of day I was driving through there wasn't much that was very apparent. I've never been to FL or the Everglades before and I thought based upon the name that I would be seeing flamingoes at the end of my drive. Well there were no flamingoes, I did find some egrets and a couple of small alligators at the Eco pond near the Flamingo visitor center.
February in the Everglades is beautiful, but already rather warm out, but no bugs. It didn't take long to walk around the Eco pond. This is one of the first parks where I've been confronted by a dangerous animal. In most locations the wildlife is far away, but here the alligators lay on the trails and there are no barriers. It makes hiking around the Everglades a little more exciting! At the same time alligators were one of the things that I wanted to find.
