Halloween Happenings, Salem MA, Oct 2008

For the month of October the place to be is Salem. I arrived in Salem in the middle of the month. I've been here before but never in October. I didn't think that at the middle of the month there would be such a crowd, but there was. I should have known when there were electronic sign boards on the freeway indicating there were multiple exits to get to Salem. It was a beautiful day and there were many people headed to Salem this afternoon.

The oldest cemetery in Salem (1637), contains the graves of a Mayflower pilgrim and witchcraft trial judge John Hawthorne. The headstones here have carvings of winged skulls and trees. Oddly the area set aside that commemorates the witch trials is not well presented or visited on this day. Everyone is busy checking out the costumes and vendors on this weekend.

The streets of Salem are packed with people on the weekends in October. Many are in costume.
